MORMANNO - CALABRIA- SOUTH ITALY
The town centre of Mormanno rises between the edge of the Costapiana mountain and of the mountain Posillipo, in the heart of the Pollino National Park on mountainous region of Orsomarso and verbicaro. Mormanno is a healthy and frequented mountain town of the Pollino, from which is easy to reach the Monte Velatro, the Monte Cerviero and the Monte Palanuda. The historical centre of Mormanno stretches on four hills, to the west there is the district of San Michele, south of San Rocco, which represents the entrance to the municipal course and to the north tower.
Mormanno, a village of Longobard origins probably founded in the VI century, clings to the Pollino slopes between the SS 19 and the SS 104 and dominates the high Lao river valley. Thanks to its geographic position, it favours excursions on the Pollino or along the coast towards Scalea. Interesting architecture abounds, such as the fifteenth-century Church of Santa Maria del Colle with its magnificent Baroque facade, the Byzantine church of Santa Caterina with its valuable Byzantine style wooden altar and the church of S.Rocco built in the late XVIII century. The surroundings of Mormanno are well-known for game hunting and the village itself is the birthplace of the famous Renaissance architect, Giovanni Donadio. Mormanno is proud of its gastronomic specialities known throughout the Province of Cosenza: the tasty "savoiardi" and the delicious cherry and almond "bocconotti".
