BRINDISI - APULIA - SOUTH ITALY
The city is located on a small promontory between two arms of the sea (Seno di Levante and Seno di Ponente) which join up with the Adriatic via the Pigonati canal. Since ancient times Brindisi has based its fortunes on its port, a natural stopping place on the way to the East. Directly connected with Rome via the Appian way, which ends here, it occupied a principal role both as a commercial town and a military base. From here the crusaders embarked for the Holy Land and, at the beginning of the century, travellers bound for the Indies
